In her Big Bay studio, Maija works with various Natural Dyes and surface design techniques. She dyes on upcycled linen and cotton fabrics, as well as excellent quality new silk and linen fabrics.
With her desire to help preserve the environment, she uses up-cycled fabrics, found in local thrift shops. Made with care and passion, each individual item is unique.
Hand dyed and printed items take much time and effort. Each dye colour is prepared separately and requires a minimum of one hour in the dye pot. Some of the natural dyes used include Madder, Indigo, Logwood, Himalayan Rhubarb, Goldenrod, Sappanwood, Lac, Cutch and Osage Orange. These dyes are colourfast and will not wash out.
Her paintings and collages are airbrushed, using an Iwata airbrush and she uses a variety of surface design techniques such as Shibori, stencilled natural dye pastes and eco printing, with leaves and blossoms.
Maija's customers have described her naturally dyed and eco-printed fabrics as eye-catching and desirable. Her unique items include Tunics, Daypacks, Scarves, Table Napkins, Tablecloths, and lengths of fabric.
